13 Must-Dos for Every Work-at-Home Mom in 2013

be healthier, wealthier and happier in 2013

With 2013 just around the corner, I can’t help but think about how I’d like the year to be for me and my family. Working on our family goals   has made me realize how truly important good health and simple happiness is, along with the security of savings, and for that there are certain things that one must do. Yep, MUST DO.

So, here are my 13 must-dos for every work-at-home mom in 2013:

1. Plan Ahead

Whether it is with a pen-and-paper notebook, a printable planner, an annual calendar or a digital app, make sure you plan your year ahead. Writing down your goals and ambitions makes them more real. Achieving the success you want, whether at home or in business, becomes possible and do-able when you know what you need to do.

2. Show Yourself the Money

That’s right. Don’t enter the year without a realistic budget plan. Both for your home and your business. Sit down with your husband and family as well as your business team and chalk out your financial roadmap. Whether it is investing, saving or spending, make sure you have it all written down.

3. Laugh Often

Learn to see the joy and express it in the smallest of things. Don’t go through a day without really laughing with someone or at something. Watch a sitcom or funny movie, if you have to. A good belly laugh relieves tension and anxiety and helps you get that rush of endorphins to give you an instant boost.

4. Nourish Your Body

If you know me, you know that this is something that I will personally be working on in 2013. Eating right, giving my body the fuel and love it deserves and discarding the junk and toxins. Nourishing your body also means regular exercise, sleeping well and drinking enough water. You’ll feel better, work better and be a much better mom, entrepreneur and home manager.

 5. Work Smart

Don’t let 2013 be a year where you drive yourself into the ground trying to do everything. Whether it is hiring help for housecleaning or working with a coach to achieve your goals, get help and work smart. As our businesses grew in 2012, we realized that working harder is NOT the solution. Working smarter is. So, we did what we do best and hired out the rest or let it go. Focus on what you do and do it well.

 6. Put Your Best Foot Forward

It’s easy for us, the busy work-at-home mom, to get used to working in sweatpants or PJs. But sometimes, to feel good, you need to look good too. Right? So, make sure you have a wardrobe that works well for you and your season of life.  Create a morning routine that allows you to get dressed. Get up 10 minutes earlier so that you can shower and dress before the morning madness sets in. You’ll feel a LOT nicer. I know.

7. Have Fun. Every Day

Too often, we get caught up in the busyness of life and forget about having fun. I’ve been guilty of it in 2012. Not so in 2013. I’m factoring in fun everyday with my family and on my own. Whether it is going for a quiet walk or baking butter cookies with my daughter or watching a movie with my husband, I will be having fun, every day.

8. Tune Into Tech

As a self-proclaimed non-tech genius, I am making a special effort to find tools that actually work for me. Tech doesn’t have to be tough. My free productivity toolkit clearly demonstrates that.  Learn about tech tools that will help you do more as a business owner and home manager. Remember, it has to work for YOU, though.

9. Listen to the Sweet Sound of Music

Music is a great way to cheer yourself up and put an all-round positive vibe on the day. Have something happy and upbeat playing while you go about doing the laundry, answering emails, working on client assignments and you’ll find that the day just breezes past happily!

 10. Be a Friend to Someone

Working from home can be lonely. I’ve stresses the importance of battling isolation as a WAHM in my eBook, but it bears repeating – connect, network, communicate. Yes, make friends. Join a walking group or a book club, be a part of an online community, simply call someone you know for a coffee date.

11. Grateful Gorgeousness

Practice gratitude. At the risk of sounding like a new-age guru, gratitude is magical. Being grateful for blessings, big and small, is a wonderful way to truly see how happy you are and also, pay attention to what you have right now. Say it out loud, give thanks quietly, write it in a journal.

12. Weed Out The Weeds

Spend some time doing the tough thing. Weed out people, activities and things that don’t nourish you or add value to your life. Whether it is a toxic ‘friend’ or a business venture that doesn’t give returns, weed it out. You’ll breathe easier and do much better.

13. Take Action

Finally, for any of this to work, you’ve got to TAKE ACTION.  Whether it is starting to eat healthy or making more money, once you’ve got it planned, act on it. A small step every day can make a big difference {click to tweet it}. Want to lose the weight? Start going for a 10-minute walk, instead of aspiring to run a mile. As the amazing and very wise Chris Guillebeau put it while on a book tour for The $100 Startup, “Don’t overthink it. Just start.”

What will be YOUR must-dos for  2013?
