Hiring Help to Manage Your Home: Should YOU Do it?

Before my daughter was born and I joined the work-at-home league, I used to work full-time in a corporate organization. I also, used to do my cleaning, mopping, dish washing and everything else ALL on my own. That’s right. It was okay. I enjoyed sweeping and mopping, and dish washing is still, my favorite chore.

However, once my work-at-home “career” started taking off and work started coming in way more than I’d anticipated and my daughter needed me around more, it was time for me to step back and take a close look at what I really wanted.

I’d opted to stay at home and be with my daughter because that was important to me. I’d chosen to work online since it gave me the flexibility of staying at home while earning. So, it was clear that these two things were my priorities.

Sweeping, mopping, dishwashing weren’t.

So, I hired help. And I love it.

I love the fact that my house is cleaned and the dishes are done while I can snuggle with my baby and read to her or catch up on emails and projects.

Would I have hired help had I not had a baby and a home business?

I don’t know. Maybe.

Should YOU Hire House Help?

This is a question that is best answered by the person making the decision: YOU. However, to help you reach that decision AND feel good about it, here’s some food for thought:

1. Will the help you get free up your time to focus on your core priorities?

2. How much will paying for help eat into your budget? What can you cut down on to afford that help?

3. Will the thought of someone else cleaning your home drive you crazy? { I personally had a lot of trouble with this one!}

4. Does your family support your decision to hire help?

So, are you a mom business owner or work-at-home mother who’s hired help? How do you feel about it? Are you thinking about getting someone to do chores? What’s holding you back?

Love the photo, Prerna – that says it all!

Getting someone to do chores? I thought that’s what what kids are for! Except all mine grew up and left home so now they do chores at their houses instead of mine. As for hiring a helper, I love the idea. Now if I could only find someone who doesn’t mind the hike in to our house…

I have been thinking about this! Sometimes letting go of all the control trying to do everything is the best thing you can do. Great to hear your experience on it. Have a lovely day!

I would much rather spend the little bit of free time that I have with my kids rather than cleaning the house! This is definitely something I hope to totally “outsource” over the next year. :-)

I also hire someone to do the general cleaning of the house, bathrooms and grounds, while I do the cooking, caring for my kid, and manage the house. There are SO many benefits to delegating, and having my time back is foremost. Less housework on my hands + more time for work and family = Worth every penny I pay!

When I was in college, studying for a career in the media a very wise professor told us that if you want to have a sane work-personal life balance then learn to buy time. Once I started working I hired a house help to swab, mop and dust my house. When I got pregnant, I hired a cook. When my son was born I hired a nanny. All because I was a working woman all along. Now I am at the verge of quitting my job of 7 years and plan to work from home. Even today a nanny is paramount to my plan of action…iin fact all 3 are still very important to me.

Hi Rituparna, thanks for sharing. You’re absolutely right. Getting our support system in order is paramount to our success and sanity as mom entrepreneur. I don’t regret hiring the help I have because it gives me the time I need to work on our businesses AND spend with my daughter. Win!
